After a hailstorm

What we do after hail, and what we don't

You decide what to do after a storm. This is our part in it, in plain words.

  • What you do first

Look from the ground. Photograph dents on gutters, vents and flashing. Stay off the roof, and make only temporary repairs such as a tarp.

  • What we do

We inspect the roof, photograph what we find and write an itemized estimate you can share with your insurer. If you ask, we can meet your adjuster at the roof.

  • What stays with you

You decide whether to file a claim. You deal with your insurer, and the deductible is yours. We don't pay it, waive it or absorb it.

  • What we don't do

We are not public adjusters. We don't file, negotiate or handle a claim for you, and we don't offer gifts or discounts for an inspection.

  • If the roof is fine

We say so in writing. Metal roofs often come through hail with cosmetic dents and nothing else, and you should know that.

Three things worth knowing about your policy

Policies differ. Your agent can tell you what yours says, and we can only tell you what we see on the roof.

  • Cosmetic damage

Some policies exclude cosmetic damage to metal roofs. A dent that doesn't affect how the roof sheds water may fall under it.

  • Class 4

Some insurers discount premiums for Class 4 roofs. Each company decides.

  • Your right to cancel

If you sign at home, you may have 3 business days to cancel. In many states you can also cancel after your insurer denies a claim.

Questions after hail

How do I know if hail hit my roof?

From the ground, look for dents on the gutters, vents and flashing. Photograph what you see before anyone visits, and stay off the roof. We can inspect it, take photos and write up what we find, and what you do with that is your decision.

What is a Class 4 rating, and will it lower my insurance?

Class 4 is the top result in the UL 2218 impact test, which checks whether a panel cracks when steel balls are dropped on it. It is a product rating, not a contractor credential. Some insurers lower premiums for Class 4 roofs and each company decides, so ask your agent. Some policies also exclude cosmetic damage to metal roofs.

Will hail dent a metal roof?

It can. A thicker steel panel on a solid deck dents less, and a panel can pass a Class 4 test and still show dents. We tell you what a dent does to the roof's job, which is often nothing, and what it does to its looks, which is a separate question your policy may treat differently.

Request a roof inspection

Tell us where the roof is and when the storm was. We will inspect it and write down what we find.
